Is it Fall Yet?

It's beginning to look a lot like fall on Blog-land, but I'm not ready to let go of summer yet. 

On the other hand, I'm quite excited about decorating for Christmas.

I've been slowly working on my fall decorating, trying to get myself all pumped for one of my favorite seasons, and I've even recovered some of my Halloween decorations from my parents' house. 

I would really adore having a mantel or some floating shelves to decorate, but until then....

Votives, already owned, filled with split peas, red beans, and popcorn, all from Walmart originally, and inspired from this. Orange candle and jute cord** also from Walmart.

**A word on Jute rope/twine: if you get the jute from Walmart or Hobby Lobby, it's probably treated, and if so, it will likely have a very strong gasoline smell. I purchased some Jute from Hobby Lobby and am taking it back because it smells so horrible that I didn't really want it in my house. The Jute I purchased from Walmart  that I used on the fall votives wasn't quite as bad but still had a smell and still, after one year after airing out , smells faintly of gasoline.

Choosing a color palette/decorating style

One of the best things you can do to create unity within your new apartment is to choose to incorporate some sort of color palette and decorating style throughout all of your rooms. Carrying this palette throughout will make your house seem well thought out and carefully executed versus kind of thrown together...even if you got half of your furniture second-hand and your wall decorations are all DIY. 

A good place to start looking for inspiration is Pinterest, particularly within the Home Decor category. 

You're probably going to realize that you like a lot of things that don't go together at all. You also have to think about the kind of vibe that you want to feel when you're in your house. For example, I love the color pink, and my old room had a bright pink wall in it. That was great and all except for the fact that I really wanted a nice, calm, serene environment to relax in. So I started recognizing that I wanted something that looks like this:

I would almost call it something along the lines of "Coastal Luxe." It's very reminiscent of kind of a beachy, coastal type of color scheme, only instead of the sand and the seashells I've got little pops of gold and silver and sparkles. 

I narrowed my major colors down to: white, beige, blue, green, taupe, silver, and gold. While the white, beige, and taupe are just kind of neutrals, I feel that they're still important in my scheme.

But this is my scheme. Back to yours. 

Besides browsing and pinning rooms from Pinterest, there are a few different ways to browse for a potential color scheme. You can try this quiz, for one. It's a pretty good one from Real Simple. Browse these color schemes from HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams. Browse through HGTV's decorating styles slideshow. Or look here at Houzz's decorating styles. 

Figure out what you like and then hope it doesn't involve expensive furniture because that's going to be hard to do on a dime.

Cultivate images and use these as inspiration. Remember, you're not going to be able to afford expensive drapes and perfect furniture. But you will use these as a guide.
